What does it mean to be a good person?
The day of the picnic dawned clear and cool; it was one of those autumn days in the Carolinas where the sky was somewhere between indigo and powder blue. My manager had the grill going and it was almost time to put on the burgers.
I was riding high. I had just received a glowing appraisal and a promotion to Advisory engineer. It meant a substantial raise and put many things on our wish list within reach. As my coworkers gabbed or flipped a frisbee, I sat in the picnic shelter, looking forward to our free afternoon. Everything was perfect.
Then my phone buzzed and everything changed.

Sue and I had a nightly ritual of watching TV in bed after the kids had been tucked in. Canβt remember for sure, but I think it was The X-files. Our evening snack was a bag of micro-waved popcorn.
As Scully and Mulder chased cigarette-smoking man, I noticed Sue had developed a cough. It had started intermittently, now and then. But it had worsened and now was so pronounced that I had to hit the pause button until her paroxysms subsided. I became alarmed.
Trips to the family doc finally resulted in X-rays. The doctor called to say she had gotten the results and sheβd like to see us both. Uh-oh.
βSee this dark spot?β she asked, pointing to one of Sueβs lungs. We nodded. βIβm not sure what that is. Itβs not normal. Iβd like to get a CT scan.β She looked at us with a look that made Sueβs hand grasp mine more tightly.

At the picnic, I pulled my flip phone out and looked at the display. Sue.
βHi,β I said. βIs everythingβ β
βItβs a mass,β she said, sobbing. βThe CT scan showed a mass. They want to do a biopsy.β
Everything faded and I felt light headed.
βA mass?β
βYes,β she cried. βCan you please come home?β
I made my excuses and left. I donβt remember much of that trip except tears and multiple pleas and promises to God.

Doctor Rigsbee was in his early 50s, dark hair flecked with gray, a kind countenance. He radiated competence and maturity. In his office, I looked at his diplomas and awards with a sense of relief. I also noticed several religious-themed pictures; a tiny one of Jesus looking into the clouds caught my eye.
βSo,β he started gently. βWeβre going to be doing a bronchoscopy. Thatβs where I feed a tube into Sueβs lung to get a sample.β He pointed at the CT scan.
Sue looked at me and I squeezed her hand.
βBut thereβs one thing,β he said. βBecause of where the mass is, Iβll need to use a childβs bronchoscope. I need to go down and then back up and the airways are very narrow there.β We looked him dumbly. He continued.
βAnd thereβs no guarantee that even then, Iβll make it,β he said. His face grew serious. βIf I canβt reach it, Iβll have to crack herβ¦ cut her rib cageβ¦and go in through the outside.β
Sue looked at me, her face ashen. I felt sick.
Dr. Rigsbee saw our expressions and came from behind his desk. He knelt on the floor next to Sue and took her hand.
βHey, hey,β he said gently. βLetβs take it one step at a time. OK?β

Surgery day arrived. I sat in the waiting room with seven-year-old Kristen and one-year-old Kelsey in her stroller as Sue was taken back and prepped.
Worst-case scenarios flooded my mind. Me at Sueβs memorial. Framed pictures of us and the kids. The minister reciting the 23rd Psalm as well-wishers blew their noses and looked at me with pity. Me, clueless, raising two kids.
Dr. Rigsbee came through the double swinging doors. βMr B?β he asked. βWeβre almost ready.β He held the door.
Behind the sheet with Sue, it was semi-private. Machines beeped and nurses spoke outside but otherwise, it was just the three of us.
βI like to give my patients a moment before we go in,β he said. His voice was kind, caring. βIs there anything youβd like to ask?β
Things blurred. βDoc,β I said. βI trust you. I just hope it goes well.β
He nodded with a kind look. βWould you like to pray?β he asked.
Iβd never encountered this with a doctor before, but I looked at Sue and she nodded.
We joined hands as he began. I donβt recall exactly what he said, but it was reassuring and a sense of peace enveloped me.

Sue went into surgery about 8:00 am. By 9:00 am, no word. Iβd said many prayers, the general, nondescript kind: please let everything go well. Please let it be OK.
Around 10:00, I had a sudden thought: pray specifics.
I had to stop and think about that. Iβd heard that rather than praying for generalities, it was better to pinpoint what we needed and to ask for those things. I recalled our meeting in Dr. Rigsbeeβs office. My mind went on autopilot.
I asked God to be with Dr. Rigsbee. To be inside him, to be his eyes and hands. To help him in whatever he needed, to take control of the operation.
Exhausted, weary, I looked at my young kids: Kristen playing with her Barbies, Kelsey asleep in the stroller.
Iβd done all I could do. It was out of my hands.

At 11:00 am, the double doors swung open and Dr. Rigsbee appeared. He removed his mask as he walked into the waiting room. He was smiling as he sat down next to me.
βWell, he said. βIt was tough going. I tried and tried with that bronchcoscope to get it it down and back up. I was just about ready to give up and crack her open when the weirdest thing happened.β He looked at me and hesitated.
βIt was as though something else took control,β he finally said. βMy handsβ¦they somehow werenβt my own. It was like I was watching. The bronchoscope went down and thenβ¦I canβt explain itβ¦it suddenly looped back up and I was staring at the mass.β
He took off his surgical cap. βI donβt know what happened in thereβ¦ but it wasnβt me.β
I looked at him. βDo you remember about what time that was?β
He rubbed his chin. βYeah, he said. βI looked at the clock as I was about to pack it in and crack her. 10:00 am.β
The exact time of my prayer.
He stood and shook my hand. βIt didnβt look malignant,β he said. βWeβll have to wait for the biopsy to tell for sure. But Iβm optimistic.β
He gave me a friendly pat on the shoulder. βPray without ceasing,β he said with a smile as he headed back into the OR.

A week later, the phone rang. It was Doctor Rigsbee. βHey, β he said. βGot a second?β I held the phone so Sue could hear.
It turned out that she had inhaled a husk of popcorn during the X-files. It had lodged in her lung and her body, thinking it was a foreign invader, had covered it with layer after layer of protective tissue. Eventually, it solidified and had shown up on the CT scan. The amount they removed for the biopsy allowed it to slough away into nothing and her cough went away.
I found Dr. Rigsbeeβs picture of Jesus looking into the clouds on the Internet somewhere. I framed it and it sat on my desk for the rest of my career, a constant reminder of faith and trust.
Now in retirement, it sits on my workbench, an inspiration from a master carpenter to one still learning.

Itβs a reminder to pray for specifics, to let go of that which is beyond my control. To trust that everything works to the good of those that love God.
And to be thankful for people like Dr. Rigsbee who walk among us, angels in disguise.

Good morning Twinnie. I have chills. The power of prayer working realtime through your doctor. So powerful. Iβll never forget this story.
This picture was ever present on my Grandmotherβs dresser with her rosary beads draped on the corner of the frame.
Thank you for this piece. Incredible! πβ€οΈ

Twinnie, thanks so much! Even though it was many years ago (flip phone, lol) I still remember it vividly. Leaving the picnic stricken, thinking the worst, the road blurring. Iβll never forget the kindness of that doc and how incredibly relieved he made me in the waiting room. I truly believe there are angels walking around in disguise.
Hope you have an awesome week! Am enjoying the last few weeks in the jeep with the windows off. Great heater, but non-existent air conditioner means gotta reassemble the olβ gal here shortly πππ»ββοΈ

Jeep windows – ugh! The signs of the seasons. I used the heated seats and steering wheel yesterday and almost cried that I had to. lol
We will be talking Jeeps as we are thinking future purchase.
Have the best day. πβ€οΈ

It was recently that I entered into a doctor’s premise that I’ve seen bible quotes, and saying that made me admire her. I love it that they believe that the most healer of all is God and they are just instruments.
Beautiful and touching story, Darryl.

A great story and I enjoyed reading it so much. You asked and the Lord did what you asked of Him. I believe that is the way we should always pray. Blessings to you and your family.

Thanks, Mags! Indeed He did. I donβt know where that part about praying for specifics came fromβ¦ no doubt buried in my brain somewhereβ¦ but God dredged it up at just the bright time and he didnβt let me down! ππβ€οΈ

Thanks, Mike. Looking back, I see Godβs hand so clearlyβ¦ we could have been given a different doctor, I might have never remembered to pray for specifics, it might not have been something so benign.

What an incredible story, and so beautifully written. As someone who has spent a fair portion of my life questioning religion, I don’t question the power of prayer, no matter who/what a person prays to. The universe works in mysterious ways. So glad everything worked out well. Dr. Rigsbee sounds like a very special person.

Lynn, thanks for the kind wordsβ¦ much appreciated ππ He was indeed a gem, every time I see that picture on my workbench, it reminds me of that crappy time and how he helped us through it. I think our kids would be living on the streets now if I had had to raise them alone!

This is just the kind of story that I needed to read this morning, my friend. Thank our Lord for doctors like Dr. Rigsbee. I love how God shows up and finds the most interesting ways to remind us that He is here with us always until the end of the age.

David, Iβm so glad my story gave you encouragement. It really was remarkable, Dr Rigsbee got it, but I think he, too, was amazed at Godβs omnipotent power. Canβt imagine what it would be like to be fumbling, struggling with an instrument for 2 hours and suddenly something takes over and youβre good to go. God is good!
Thx, my friend, for reading and the commentβ¦ much appreciated ππ

I’m wiping some tears because this is very moving. God definitely worked a miracle that day!
I know the fear and the worry that the spouse feels. But I also know the peace you experienced, the joy, the faith-strengthening truth that there’s nothing too hard for God if we ask (specifically!). Much love to you and your family. God bless you for sharing!

Aptivi, thanks so much for that feedback⦠it means so much. Dr. R really was a Godsend, the right guy at the right moment. Even though he was spiritual, I think he was flabbergasted by how things turned out⦠Struggling for two hours, sweating, hands cramping, getting ready to do Plan B⦠and suddenly, everything is as easy as falling off a bike.
Thanks so much for reading and the kind wordsβ¦ Much appreciated ππ

My wife had breast cancer in 2013. Dr. Mullane, a Christian man, walked with us through a whole year; surgery followed by chemo and then radiation. Quarterly visits became semi annual and then once a year over ten years of follow-up. When it was over, we cried inside because weβd no longer have fellowship with this wonderful man. My wife remains cancer free.
