Kiki’s Questions for me:

1. What is your favorite hobby?

Surfing. I picked it up later in life but I was hooked the first time I stood up. Riding the wave, wind and salt spray in my face, all my senses were suddenly heightened. Now I pause movies with ocean scenes to figure out how I’d tackle particular waves. Watched a YT of guys surfing in Lake Erie in December with “chin icicles.” Briefly considered/quickly dropped the notion of trying during the next Christmas visit to the PA in-laws. 😂

2. What was your favorite year of your life—and why?

1986. It was the year I fast-talked Sue into walking down the aisle with me. We lived in an apartment right across A1A from the beach and at night we slept with the windows open. We could hear the dull boom of the surf and smell of night-blooming jasmine. I was new in my career and became an uncle that year.

3. Who was your first boyfriend or girlfriend?

A classmate named Linda. We both worked at the Boca Raton animal shelter. I wrote about it in my post The Clinic.

4. Do you have a bucket list? What’s on it?

Wow, where to start? I’ve always had this insane wanderlust, a craving to see what’s over the hill or around the next bend. I’ve checked off several of the biggies, but still up is New Zealand, Argentina/Patagonia, an Alaskan cruise, the Holy Land, the cross-Canada train, and completing my exploration of Route 66.

Non-travel: skydiving (I’ve done parasailing), stand-up comedy, mastering finger-picking on the guitar, finishing my book, getting my pilot’s license, and becoming a grandpa.

5. Did you play a sport growing up?

Yes, but not organized. We lived in the sticks and practice was kinda out. In my neighborhood, we played tackle football (with no padding…ooof), basketball and baseball.

6. What are you afraid of?

Having my dreams turn to regrets (Gene Fowler)

7. What was your first concert?

Not that this a security question or anything like that 😉 but it was Jimmy Buffett. Hard to see the stage through all the reefer smoke, lol. Best concert was the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt at the University of Florida.

8. If you could have one last conversation with someone you’ve lost, who would it be—and what would you say?

My dad. I was a late bloomer and goofy as a kid. Later in college, while he was proud that I earned a bachelor’s in engineering, I think he found my casual approach to school exasperating. He was flying the world’s most sophisticated bomber at an age when I was mastering spinning a frisbee on my fingernail.

It wasn’t until I was married and established in my career that I think I earned his respect. Then we became good friends, solving the world’s problems one Budweiser at a time in our sand chairs under the shade of the seagrape tree.

He’s already answered many of my questions, but I’d ask him what was his favorite season in his long and interesting life.

9. Why do you blog?

I’m a voracious reader and my brain is filled with stuff I’ve gleaned in my journeys through the Dewey decimal system. The natural outflow to all this is writing, but as an engineer, my opportunities for creative writing were few.

I found WordPress about the time I retired, and finally, an outlet for writing. I’m an extrovert, and the camaraderie and the amazingly kind and creative friends I’ve made are just as rewarding as the writing.

10. Who is your favorite musical artist or group?

Tough one. I think my favorite lyricist is Jackson Browne; the depth and exquisitely crafted style of his lyrics blow me away. Fav female artist is Linda Ronstadt. I read she practiced right hours a day and her soaring contralto/soprano vocals, that could fill a cathedral, give me goosebumps.

Fav group is the Beatles. They were ahead of my time, but my brother…almost five years older than me…influenced me heavily. A great book on their personalities, evolved style, and incredibly innovative studio techniques are outlined in their engineer Geoff Emerick’s book “Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles.”

11. Social media: help or hinder?

Ugh. I’m reminded of the old observation that fire is a good servant but a terrible master. Used sparingly, judiciously, I think it’s a good way to keep up with friends and family.

But I’m turned off by all the pretension, the divisiveness, fake AI content, the appalling loss of privacy as the algorithms learn me inside and out and sell my info to advertisers. I hate looking up from scrolling reels to find my bedtime was two hours ago. Someday, I fear, I will regret the uncounted hours I wasted on it.

    1. Mike, thanks! Kiki is indeed a good egg. I had a really hard time whittling it down to 11. I know some folks are very private, so I didn’t include them, as much as I would have liked to have learned more about them. I also tried to select folks who had not been chosen before.

I just love this community… am consistently amazed at the creativity across the spectrum… prose, poetry, art, photography. So glad to be a part of it 😎🙏❤️

    1. Hee hee! 😉😎 Well, it’s rare to find someone who is not only a great chef, but who skillfully wraps the recipe inside a great backstory. We’ve tried several of your recipes, and they are really, really good. I hope more people find out about you and subscribe. There truly are “so many dishes.” 🥘🍱🍷

  2. Darryl – my twin! Thank you so very much. I’m in love with your work. What’s even crazier is our varied yet spot on similar interests! Looking forward to years of story sharing. 😊

    1. Thanks, Kiki! Likewise! Your posts are so well written and relatable, they’re always a delight to read. And interests… geez, it’s rare to find someone with so many shared pursuits. If they ever have Comic-Con with Jerry Seinfeld at the NASA complex, with a Jimmy Buffett weekend tribute , and free admission if you drive a Jeep… I’ll meet you at launch pad 39A 😉😎❤️

  3. Congrats on your well-deserved nomination, Darryl! On your bucket list, you mentioned Rte 66. This year is the hundredth anniversary of The Mother Road, so on our way from and to Texas, hubs and I intend to spend some of this year on sections of it that we’ve missed. To kick it off, we did most of the Texas panhandle stretch on our journey home last week. I did a few posts about it along the way. It truly feels like stepping back in time.

    1. Terry, thanks so much for the feedback! I’ve done it from Santa Monica to Albuquerque. It was in December and included side trips to the Grand Canyon and the Meteor Crater. The air was cold and the sky was this incredible bluish indigo color. We could see mountains 100 miles away like they were just a few miles off.

I remember this one little town, Seligman, AZ, pop 446. It’s the only thing around for miles and miles and it lives on Route 66 souvenirs, gas stations and restaurants. They have a water tower that the railroad fills up periodically. Got chatting with a young lady who had moved away to Tucson for a while. But before long, she got homesick and moved back. She said people were always asking her if she didn’t get bored and lonely, but Seligman was her home and she loved it 😊❤️

Def wanna do the rest of Route 66. The old TV show is classic if you’ve never seen it! 😎

Thanks again for reading and the kind words…much appreciated!

      1. You’re very welcome, Darryl. Over the years, we’ve touched on a fair bit of the western stretches of 66 in New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Now that we’ve done the Texas panhandle stretch, all we have left is from Chicago to Texas, so we’re considering taking the long way south in October and covering as much as we can in Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma. I remember the TV show well, as well as the theme song. Many of the souvenirs we saw along the way this year actually had the words “get your kicks” on them. 😊

    1. Thanks Info-Man! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Kind of a fun way to get to know folks in WP land a little better. I’m looking forward to reading what folks say about the questions I came up with 😉

  4. Your responses to the questions are AMAZING!! Not that I have to comment on Jimmy Buffett..but I don’t know if you know I’m a ParrotHead. I cried the day he died as if I had lost a true friend. That’s a blog for September I believe…

    1. Kiki, I did not know that… but I am not surprised! 😎🌴🍺 🍔 Just another thing we have in common. When we used to drive down to the Keys, as soon as we got past Islamorada, it was nonstop JB time for the road tunes. What an interesting guy! Singer, songwriter, author, pilot, actor, conservationist. Like the guy in “He went to Paris”…76 years of perpetual motion. It was indeed a sad day when he left 😢

Thanks for the kind words about my answers…they were great questions! Thanks also for the nomination…can’t wait to see what my folks will say 😎🏄🏻‍♂️

  5. Thank you so much for nominating me here, Darryl. I appreciate you. I enjoyed your answers. However, can I decline this challenge? I just done drafting my review and it feels like draining my brain cells.😁🤭 I wish to answer just one question today, and it has eleven questions 🤩 Besides, gc nominated me, too, and it becomes 22 questions all in all. I’m smiling. I want my brain to relax a bit, and I hope you understand me now. Hugs and happy Friday. Stay awesome!

  7. Darryl … thank you for the Sunshine Blogger nomination ☀️😎 Reading your answers felt like cruising Highway 1 with the windows down – salt in the air, surf in the rearview, and a playlist that somehow knows exactly who you are.

Lake Erie in December though? That’s not surfing – that’s a cry for help from your circulatory system. 1986 sounds like a whole novella, jasmine nights, surf booming through open windows, and you fast-talking Sue like a man who knew the tide was in his favor.

Patagonia, Route 66, skydiving, guitar mastery, pilot’s license. At this point you’re one hobby away from becoming a National Geographic special and I’m tuning in 😀 !!!

“Dreams turning to regrets” – leave it to you to drop a line that sounds like it belongs in a California-sunset monologue narrated by Sam Elliott.

Your dad under the seagrape tree solving the world’s problems with Budweiser’s? That’s pure Americana. I’d read a whole book about those afternoons.

We write, we drift, we flick little waves of light across the page, and the whole ride feels smoother because we’re catching the same current. (( ❤ )) Bless you ~ Always

    1. Ah SS 🏄‍♀️, you are one of the good peeps who get it all. “a California-sunset monologue narrated by Sam Elliott.” 😂👏 I can just picture it… that unmistakable voice that also says “Beef… it’s what’s for dinner.” 😎

Love the echoing last paragraph there… indeed we do, my friend 🙏❤️

Looking forward to seeing your answers! Enjoy your weekend 😎
