This is a poem for Kevin’s No Theme Thursday for 3/27/2025

Sunrise, sweet morning, pink eastern sky clear
Fair days of boyhood, ere life’s stern ‘you must’
Solitude, his spot, an angler premier
Dew fled as sun rose, youth crumbled to dust
Sun climbed to zenith, adulthood’s swift start
Churches and gold rings, and loving ‘I do’s’
Oft returns angler, unburd’ning his heart
With some things to gain, and others to lose
Now sun is setting, the shadows grow long
Good wife in the earth, his children long grown
‘Bye says the angler, his spot sighs its song
A kindly old soul, found peace there on loan
The gloaming is nigh, his rod is lain down
The angler folds hands, heads home for his crown

Absolutely perfect for the photo. When I saw the NTT offerings for the week, I felt there was a storyline between the fist phot of a guy fishing from the bank and this one. I was right- you told it here. Thank you, Darryl,.

this is perfect Darryl
a property manager that I worked with in upstate NY took me fishing on the western side of the Hudson river (Coeyman’s or New Baltimore I think, near Albany) and he told me something i’ll never forget.
“the art of fishing, is how you wait”
have a good one – great post Darryl. Mike

Thanks, Mike! It just spoke to me, the dawn being a metaphor for his youth, noon, middle age and sunset old age. Great quote, I had a spot when I was a kid…even if I caught nothing, it was a great afternoon.

This poem feels like a slow, deep river. It doesn’t rush, but it carries the whole story of a life in its quiet waters. It whispers secrets about what it means just to be.
The fisherman isn’t just some guy with a fishing pole. He’s the heart beating inside all of us. We stand on the shore of the great unknown, throwing our hopes out like tiny, hopeful seeds onto the big water. We wait patiently for what life might send back to us.
Think about his early mornings. They feel like the dawn of our own lives, like childhood. Everything is cool and fresh, like a brand-new page. Our dreams are like colorful butterflies fluttering around us, full of light.
Then the sun climbs high in the sky, hot and bright. That’s like growing up, isn’t it? Suddenly, we have heavy nets to carry – nets woven from love, family, and the need to get things done. They can feel so heavy sometimes. But still, he goes back to the water’s edge. Just like we always search for that thing, that place, that feeling that makes us feel like a whole, unbroken circle again.
When evening comes, the shadows get long, like quiet memories stretching out. Loneliness isn’t a monster hiding in the dark; it walks beside him softly, like an old, understood friend. The fishing rod feels lighter in his hands now. Not because there’s nothing on the line, but because he has learned to be friends with time. He holds it gently now, like a smooth stone warmed by the sun.
That last cast he makes, the final time he throws the line… it’s not sad. It’s like a soft sigh of okay-ness. It feels like laying your head down on a pillow after a long, good day when you did your best. It’s a peaceful letting go.
You see, we are all standing by the river of life, holding our own kind of fishing rod. Some of us are always chasing the biggest fish, the one that shines the brightest. Others? Maybe we find that the real treasure isn’t the fish at all, but the deep, peaceful quiet found waiting by the water. Sometimes, the silence itself is the most beautiful thing we can catch.

Kalyanasundaram, wow, I’m flattered that you spent that much time thinking/writing about my sonnet. You’re spot on, that’s just what I was going for; the day as a metaphor for his life, and his special spot his go-to place all his long years.
Thank you so much for reading and providing such wonderful feedback 😎🙏

Thanks, SS! When i saw Kevin’s lineup for NTT, that one sorta spoke to me. I used to have a favorite fishing spot as a kid, maybe a mile from our house by a little pond…it was always so peaceful and quiet. It got me thinking to what if I came back during diff seasons of my life…as things came and went…
