Trail trial

Daily writing prompt
Tell us about your favorite pair of shoes, and where they’ve taken you.

Several years ago at work, I was struggling with a solution for a project I was managing. I was usually pretty good at this sort of thing; I got a sense of what was needed and potential approaches began to come to mind. If they didn’t, I’d mentally put it aside and the answer would suddenly pop into my head hours or days later.

On this particular day, my thoughts had become jumbled, people were talking, the email was chiming. Way too much distraction. I thought a 30-minute walk on our site nature trail might kick a few ideas loose.

It was a beautiful Fall day. A front had come through, bringing rain, then cloudless Carolina skies. It was in the upper 60s and the woods had a rich, loamy smell.

I was walking at a good clip and most of the leaves were off the trees. Here and there, patches of sunlight lit up the trail. An idea came to mind and I took my eyes off the trail, and looked up at the indigo Autumn sky without stopping. “Whaddya think, Lord?” I asked like the crazy Irishman in Braveheart. “I was thinking that if–“

It was as though an invisible hand suddenly pushed me in the center of the chest, forcefully. I stopped so abruptly that my sunglasses slid down my nose. What…?

I looked around and didn’t see it at first because it blended in so perfectly with the fallen leaves and the sun-mottled trail. But directly in front of me, curled up in a striking position, was a fat copperhead. Its triangle-shaped head was easily two inches across and its body was the the size of my forearm. I was wearing my business-casual tennis shoes and one more step would have been disastrous. It was motionless except for its tongue flipping in and out.

A friend of mine was bitten by a Copperhead and had complications. He almost lost his leg.

I breathed a silent prayer of thanks, took a few pix at a safe distance and continued on with caution. Later, I wrote a blog about my experience for the company intranet, urging people to tread carefully.

I don’t have those shoes anymore, they wore out as I “got my steps in.” They were downgraded to shoes for outdoor yard work, then water shoes, then eventually tossed. But they were a mute testimony to the day my guardian angel blocked my path.

    1. Hahaaha, yes Mary, it’s how we roll 😂

I’m thankful that God was watching over me and I’ve been careful ever since when walking in the woods to watch where I’m stepping! 😎🙏

    1. Thank you, my friend! Yeah, I was amazed at how well it was camouflaged. Really remarkable creatures, was reading they can detect a diff in temp of a fraction of a degree (like 0.003 C) for several meters. I’m a lot more careful when walking in the woods now! Thanks for reading and commenting 😎

    1. Tim, yeah, I was grateful! I had to look very closely to see it. I’m much more careful about watching where I walk now when in the woods. Even at night… sometimes they lay on the sidewalks right after sunset to get the residual heat, so I always take a flashlight. Thanks for reading and commenting! 😎

    1. Well I didn’t see it at first… I had to look very closely for several seconds bc its camouflage was so good. I don’t mind nonvenomous snakes as they eat rats and mice, but these pit vipers… rattlesnakes, cottonmouths and copperheads… are not to be fooled with! Thanks much for reading and commenting 😎

  1. Snakes… yeah, you gotta be careful of those guys. They totally blend in. Good thing you stopped short. They always warn me about snakes when I hike locally, but I’ve been lucky and haven’t seen one. I did run into a bear once, that was a little crazy…

    1. Yeah, as I said in the caption, my friend took his dog out at night to do its business. He was wearing flip flops and walking in English ivy no more than 3-4” high. All of a sudden, Bam! Poor guy’s leg got all ulcerated, I think necrotic tissue, vascular issues… it was touch and go for a while. Def much more careful about watching where I’m going. I always let my FIL lead the way 😂 JK of course, he’s OK.

A bear! Man, that would be hairy. I’ll try to think of a song with bear in the lyrics 😉

Thx for reading and the comment! 😎

    1. Linda, yes… I’d be petrified to walk around in Australia! Beautiful country but I’ve seen nature shows with all these venomous spiders, snakes, jellyfish, crocs, great white sharks… 😰😎 Thanks for reading and commenting 🙂

    1. Thanks, Laura! Yeah, its camouflage is almost perfect. Side story: I had a friend in Jr High and we were both into animals. One day at the lockers he comes up, looks around furtively. “Hey, guess what I got?” He opens this box he’s carrying… friggin coral snake! 😱😂

      1. Omg, that’s a wild story! Hahaha 😂 Yeah, and what’s crazy is I’m about to gear up to go hiking in the Northern GA mountains and all this snake talk has got me a little on edge 🤣 😆
I do have a favor to ask, though, however, if you’d be so kind! 🙏 I was just nominated for Author of the Month at Spillwords, and I know you write over there, if you’d could vote for me, it would mean a lot! https://spillwords.com/vote/ ✨🫶 I’d really appreciate it. 😀 Hope your week is going well!

  2. They blend right into the ground! I do believe that was a guardian angel, Darryl, that saved you. Whew! That was too close 😉 … Hope the trails are friendlier and clearly visible. I will get to walking and zone everything out and that would have been a disaster. This is another reason no earbuds whilst out! 😀

  3. My dad was a ranger at a Girl Scout camp, where copperhead snakes were a constant presence in the canyons surrounding the campers’ tent platforms during the summer. At night, he, the camp director, other leaders, and I would search for them with flashlights, carefully gathering them to ensure the campers’ safety. The following day, the captured snakes were used for scout projects, transformed into hatbands, wristbands, and other crafts. One summer alone, we captured well over 100 copperheads—yet not a single scout, leader, ranger, or even his son was ever bitten.

    1. Im sorry, somehow I missed your comment 😕 Wow! 100 copperheads… that’s crazy! I sometimes walk through the neighborhood at dusk or shortly after and they sometimes lay on the sidewalks bc they’re warm. My friend got bitten while walking his dog through English Ivy (like 6” tall) and he got bit… had complications, vascular issues, some necrosis I think, he was lucky to emerge with all his limbs 😵‍💫

Thanks much for reading and leaving such an interesting comment! 😎
