NTT poem
A poem for Kevin’s 1/9/2025 No Theme Thursday

Alone in the glittering twilight
Save brute companion or two
The hunter strides, death waits in the night
Virtues of humbleness few
Orion, massive, noble of height
But folly hides what is true
‘Twas foretold that regardless his might
His killer—he’d give no due
The scorpion, crouched, deep in his furs
Delivered the fatal sting
Placed in the sky, thrice foiled the curse
‘round the North Star will they wing
Three to etern’ly rule winter sky
Scorpio reigns as summers nights fly

This poem is based on the mythology of Orion and Scorpio. Orion boasted there wasn’t an animal he couldn’t defeat; the gods sent a scorpion to kill him. Placed into the sky with Ursa Major and Ursa Minor… the big and little bears (aka Big and Little Dipper)… Orion and Scorpio never inhabit the same sky.

Thanks, Tim! Yeah, the astronomy geek in me saw the hunter and the big and little bears and immediately went to that theme. We go to the beach quite a bit and I usually sneak away to the dark beach with my scope. Every season brings new constellations and deep sky objects. It never gets old 😎 🔭

Thanks, Laura! Feeling quite British today… we had (rare) snow here, so on a wintry afternoon, what could be better than a spot of tea whilst reading WP? ☕️😎

Sounds like a good way to spend a snowy afternoon. Stay snug and warm and enjoy looking at the snow from safe indoors. 😎

Wow, Darryl … Your poem brings the story of Orion and Scorpio to life in such a beautiful way. The way you blend the stars and mythology is really captivating. I especially love the balance of pride, fate, and the struggle between them. As a Scorpio myself, I find this even more interesting and meaningful. Great work Brother.

Thank you, my friend! I think I told someone else, I’m an astronomy nerd and as soon as I saw the big and little bears and the hunter guy, that popped into my head. Scorpio in the summer is magnificent… the background behind it is the center of the Milky Way and it’s one of few constellations you can easily make out… this bright red star in the south with a big fish hook hanging down… I marvel at God’s creation when I see this and realize how vast He is and how short our time on this rocky ball is… amazing. Thanks as always, Willie, for being so supportive and leaving such a nice comment 😎🏄🏻♂️

Funny that you went with a mythological based theme here, because that image was loosely based on Nanook the Inuit deity. We were in a similar wheelhouse 😄
A fantastic write, as always, brother! Love anything mythology based! 💪💪

Nanook of the North! Thanks, brother, as soon as I saw the big and little bears and the Viking-esque hunter dude, it popped into my head. Thx for a great assortment of artwork! 😎👏

This poem brought back fond childhood memories, Darryl. On hot summer nights, before air conditioning in every home was a thing, Mom would put out a blanket in the back yard and we’d all lay out under the night sky until the house cooled off. Dad would show us the constellations and we’d search the sky for Sputnik.

Terry, what great times those must have been. No phones ringing or chirping, not itching to work on a to-do list, no “finish up” items from work… just sitting outside with your family watching the stars come up. Think when it warms up, I might try that. Thx for reading and the comment 😎

Beautiful poem-tale, Darryl! Orion and his companion Sirius are among my favorites in the night sky. Imposing and mighty shining! But not enough to reign in summer sky. A wonderful all-year-round experience throughout our celestial sphere. I greatly enjoy it. Light and blessings to you, my friend.
