My Precioussss

Daily writing prompt
What book could you read over and over again?

My brother was never much of a shopper. One Christmas Eve, he grabbed the first book he could from a bargain bin as they were closing. He wrapped it and gave it to me with great flourish the next morning.

The book he had so carefully chosen was The Two Towers, the middle book of JRR Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Talk about being lost….who the heck is Frodo? Ring? What ring? Gandalf, Saruman, Aragorn…the fudge? Blecch.

Years later in college, a friend recommended the trilogy. I was hooked from the first few pages of the first book, The Fellowship of the Ring. The detail that Tolkien, a professor of English at Oxford, included was remarkable. He invented an Elvish alphabet and language and a map of Middle Earth, where the story unfolds.

It’s a timeless look at good vs evil, of heroism, of self-sacrifice, greed, malice, love. The characters are masterfully developed, the plot superb, and the level of detail and interconnectivity between the three volumes amazing.

I read the books to my kids. I’ve seen the movies several times; Peter Jackson did a wonderful job of distilling the essence into three different movies.

It’s the perfect read for a lazy summer afternoon, a snowy afternoon in front of a fireplace, a camping trip.

Tolkien was close friends with famed Christian author C.S. Lewis. We had a small group from my church use a companion guide as the backdrop for a book study: Hobbit Virtues: Rediscovering J. R. R. Tolkien’s Ethics from The Lord of the Rings

Can’t recommend this trilogy highly enough. Folks who’ve read it will understand the title of my blog. Others will have to read it to find out. 🙂

  1. Wonderful — CS Lewis and Tolkein were members of what they called The Inklings, a group of writers who hung out together at Oxford. Maybe it’s time to revisit the book, The Fellowship; The Literary Lives of the Inklings (I just pulled it from my shelf). Did you get to watch the eclipse today? Here, it was about 35% coverage and very, very magical :)))) Dawn

  2. Dawn! How are ya, mi Amiga? Yeah, saw the eclipse here, it was maybe 75%… so cool, all the buzzing of insects subsided and the spring peepers began their nightly serenade… then just as quickly, it was reversed… great uncertainty with the animal peeps today 😂

I hope you have a great day tomorrow! 🏄‍♂️😎

  3. I had an ex who was absolutely obsessed TLOTR series but I’ve never read it myself. I’ve always wanted to but I don’t know if I’ll like it since it’s a genre I rarely read.

    1. Hi Pooja! How’re things today?

LOTR is not the typical sci-fi/fantasy genre… no light sabres or phaser guns, lol… the first book involves the journey of four of them through the wilderness, guided by a mysterious stranger who is more than he seems… don’t wanna give too much away, but maybe you could try a few first pages and see what you think… in any event, Tolkien is a master writer/storyteller 😎

      1. Pretty busy but in a good way!

I’ll try out the first book and if I like it I’ll continue. I’ve heard such good things about Tolkien but I’m so intimidated by his books lol 😂

  4. A guy I knew when I was involved in contemplative Christianity named Carl McColman wrote a book called The Lion, The Mouse, and the Dawn Treader. It presents the spiritual aspects of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I thought it might interest you. Carl writes in a straightforward way.

  5. I’m right there with you. Still one of my favourite books and I’ve read it so many times. Normally films come second, especially on this grand scale, but they captured the essence perfectly and I’ve watched them repeatedly too!

    1. Maryjane, thanks for the comment! We bought the extended version of Return of the King (4.5 hours) and watched it Christmas Day after the presents and stuff. It was so cool… cold outside, hot chocolate, watching Frodo and Sam inch their way closer… 😎
