Tax Dance

Daily writing prompt
How would you improve your community?

I’m at a mental place tonight where I had an idea for a really enthusiastic, engaged community.

All the people in our neighborhood go to the $1.25 store and get poster boards. They write “IRS Form 1040″…or whatever our favorite Schedule or Worksheet is… and tie it to a stick with a string. Illustrations can be added showing pictorially their sentiments about said form or schedule.

Then the community starts a big firepit in the cul-de-sac and they do the sacred Tax Day dance, with chanting and dancing. Many brews are consumed.

Each member of the community then comes forward and is given one minute to describe their favorite encounter with the IRS, or the idiots on the help chat on Turbo Tax or Tax Cut. They then dangle their “IRS form” over the fire and burn it in effigy while the community applauds and cheers.

Finally, (depending on local laws), fireworks are lit, and the boisterous community disperses with promises to reconvene in October…with their favorite audit stories, because the IRS did not see the humor of the drunken comments filed with their returns.

      1. No worries! Someone else said my comment got sent to spam. I was raised eating that stuff, so I figure spam in any form is somehow enmeshed in my DNA, predisposing my comments to just sort of by nature enjoy hanging out with electronic gremlins. If a comment goes missing, it’s probably in an alternate universe Euro-disco dressed in Naugahyde leggings and dancing with whatever it is that turns my WiFi on and off randomly in the morning (but only if the coffee’s weak). ☕😱

  1. I love this! We need it in the UK. My husband has just received a tax demand for a sum he paid last October. Now he has to fight his way through the red tape with which the HMRC surrounds itself to tell them to take a hike. I think we’ll take a leaf out of your book tonight. Thanks for the idea! 🙂

    1. Hahaaha, thanks, Laura! Oh man, what a huge PIA. Hours and hours of filling out forms and the people on the chat help are clueless… unable to answer the simplest question… after 30 min of back and forth, I’m told to “consult a tax professional” or the lovely, cheerful folks at the IRS 😑😂🥾

      1. Sounds like you ‘tax experts’ train at the same place ours do – a huge PIA indeed. I think we ought to make your tax dance a global celebration, massive bonfires and the rest. An excellent idea! 🙂
