50 Shades of Delay

Daily writing prompt
If there was a biography about you, what would the title be?

Procrastination has plagued me as long as I can remember. Rich in ambition but poor in results, I have to-do lists dating from the mid 90s.

I’ve read a bit about the psychology behind procrastination. Fear of failure. Decision fatigue. Difficulty with planning. Depression. I don’t know what’s going on with me, maybe a mixture of everything.

It’s frustrating and disturbing. When I was in my 20s, I has a list of things in my mind that I was going to do…write a novel. Several novels. Live in the country on 10 acres as a homesteader. Hike the Appalachian Trail. Get my pilot’s license and a plane.

I’ve done none of these. I’ve thought about them often but just putting together a plan is so taxing, so many decisions, so many skill gaps, that I give up after an hour or two and do some mindless thing like watch TV or play a video game. And the older I get, the less runway I have…the more physical barriers I encounter…the farther these dreams recede.

Blogging has opened a door for me. In reading of the shared struggles from all the bloggers here…so many different stories from college people to Octogenarians…it’s given me hope. That I am not alone; that maybe there’s still time; that I can still leave something to say I was here.

  1. I opened my WordPress 2 years ago and have 33 posts and a whole 3 chapters of a book complete. I struggle to stay committed and motivated also. The daily prompts help me at least write something, but I’ve become too reliant, and think they are starting to distract me from writing my book. But. They keep me writing, which is the true goal. So keep writing your heart out, and maybe just pick one section of the Appalachian trail to explore. 🙃

    1. Thanks! Agree that the daily prompts are a great tool to keep the creative juices going. I’ve been thinking for ages about a book and I’ve learned quite a bit from others about Amazon/other publishers, the process, etc. This is such a great community with some exceptionally talented people.

I def think you have the stories and ability to write the kind of book you’re reading at 2:00 am. I can read it while I’m hiking the AT 😎

  2. Darryl, in nine years of blogging I have never come across these daily prompts but they seem like a lot of fun!

Oh, I think most of us are experts at procrastination at some stages of our lives – you may write that novel yet! Or hike that trial! Just real life tends to get in the way at times.

You’ve got a great title idea for your biography, striking, one that stops the reader in their tracks and to check it out!

    1. Annika, thank you for your kind words of encouragement ❤️

I did get one item off my bucket list…my wife and I spent 8 days last summer in England and one of the days was in the Lake District… we toured Beatrix Potter’s home and then took a lake cruise on Lake Windermere. It blew me away. We were soooo close to Yorkshire but we came by train from London and had no way to get over there. Next time!

We also toured Hawkshead, also beautiful…a 800 yo church sort of watching over the town. Here in the States, we consider anything 250 yo to be ancient, lol

  3. Oh, I understand. I have written about my ol’ pal Procrastrination quite a lot on my blog. It’s a toughie — I don’t have the answers — but I believe we can keep trying to get better at not letting ourselves down. Peace. xx

    1. Rojie…sigh… yeah, one of these days. I’ve been pulling together some ideas… I’m really inspired by some of the folks here who have been published. I wouldn’t do it expecting to become rich and famous, I just think it would be cool to see your name in print and give people a laugh or make them think… or even get verklempt 😂

We’re past hump day, my friend… woot! 😎
